Aurum Jewellers latest workshop project has been the creation of a unique, limited edition chess set, depicting the friendly rivalry between Guernsey and Jersey.

The game of chess is believed to have originated in the 7th Century and has been widely represented in art and literature because of its intellectual depth and its roots in many civilizations. The varied interpretations of chess set pieces throughout history are testament to the challenges and inspirations posed to both artist and artisan.

There had been talk of making a chess set for some 20 years in the Aurum workshop, so the team thought it was about time to action the concept and at the same time mark the shop’s 40th anniversary. Much time, energy and research has gone into creating this exciting objet d’art, aided in no small way by customers eager to share ideas and chess expertise and thus helping with the decision as to what form the individual chess pieces would take.

Aurum’s qualified craftsmen have produced the Bailiwick Chess Set in solid sterling silver. Working from detailed sketches done in-house, each chess piece was intricately hand carved in wax, before the casting of a limited number in silver. The pieces depict a mixture of historical figures, animals and places that are relevant to Jersey and Guernsey. The board consists of squares of pink Jersey Mont Mado granite and grey Guernsey granite. In keeping with the local product ethic, the box has been made by local craftsmen from solid Jersey oak.

The Bailiwick chess set is now available to view in Old Government House Hotel and Spa Guernsey, so come along and see this beautiful work of art, enjoy an afternoon tea and maybe even start a game!
