The dream of a marina in Alderney may soon become a reality.

The design team were delighted when they were advised that they had been selected as the preferred developer of Alderney Marina and very pleased that the States have expressed their confidence in the proposal.

They intend to incorporate an Alderney company and give as much work as possible to local contractors and professionals.

The plans will create the only marina in the Channel Islands with 24 hour tidal access, which will be a unique draw to visiting yachtsmen. This is expected to have a very long- term beneficial impact on the Island’s economy.

The technical team will comprise;
Robin Walters: Robin is a charted engineer and the founder and Chairman of Walcon Marine, a company that specialises in the design of quality yacht harbours. It has been responsible for the installation of more than 97,000 marina berths in 6 continents.

Derek Elliott: Derek is a senior partner of Kay Elliott and Partners, an internationally recognised firm of architects who have created marinas, aquariums and leisure projects around the world.

Gordon Owen: Gordon was formerly Chief Executive Officer of Cable and Wireless and is a long term Alderney resident.

Robin Walters said “We are really looking forward to working with the States and starting this exciting project as soon as possible.”

Peter Allen, Alderney States Member and Chairman of the Marina Advisory Group said “We have been talking about a marina in Alderney for many years. This latest push to deliver a marina for Alderney has taken a long time and we had two excellent bids, but we have our preferred bidder.

He continued “I firmly believe that we will quickly realise the benefits of a marina and we are keen to engage with the preferred developer to deliver the project as efficiently as we can.

There is a huge amount of work still to do but we are committed to the project and we will ensure there is a period of public engagement to showcase the plans and take the island’s views into account.”
