Ernst & Young senior manager Carl Ceillam has successfully qualified as a Certified EnCase Examiner (EnCE).

Heading up Guernsey’s IT Risk and Assurance practice, Mr Ceillam is believed to be one of the first people outside of law enforcement in the Channel Islands to gain this qualification. EnCase software is used by investigators to conduct complex computer examinations.

David Moore, partner of Ernst & Young; “This is a fantastic achievement.”

“It highlights both Carl’s experience and dedication, and Ernst & Young’s commitment to service quality. This certification is widely recognised by law enforcement as a sign of extensive computer forensics knowledge and ability.”

In order to successfully qualify as an EnCE, Mr Ceillam had to demonstrate previous forensics experience and pass a complex written entrance exam. A practical exam then had to be completed over a period of two months using a test case and EnCase software. Failure at any stage would mean starting from scratch; Mr Ceillam passed each stage first time.

He said that this was the hardest but most satisfying qualification he has achieved.

“It was a natural choice,” said Mr Ceillam. “It fits with the growing demand for computer forensics services that we’ve seen over the last few years. But the pace is increasing, and our clients’ needs are becoming more complex.

“Previously we’d find ourselves supporting internal corporate investigations of employee misconduct, fraud or moonlighting, and perhaps the occasional marital dispute. However, more recently our involvement is with criminal and civil cases, ranging from disputes to money-laundering. There seems to be a growing realisation amongst the legal community that electronic evidence can make or break a case.”

Mr. Ceillam continues; “Our role at Ernst & Young is to identify, secure and analyse that evidence, so that it can be presented in a compelling and incontrovertible way. Having the necessary skills and qualifications allows me to fulfil that role.”
