Gas registration in Guernsey
Since the introduction of the Health and Safety (Gas) (Guernsey) Ordinance, 2006 gas installers in Guernsey, in common with the UK, have been required by law to be registered with an approved body. In respect of Guernsey this was the Council for Registered Gas Installers (CORGI).
On the 1st April 2009, responsibility for the registration scheme in the UK was transferred to the Gas Safe Register. An interim arrangement was agreed with CORGI to continue to maintain the scheme in Guernsey until 30th March 2010.
Following the loss of the UK scheme, CORGI could not give the necessary assurances that it would be able to maintain the Guernsey scheme into the future (particularly once Northern Ireland moved to the Gas Safe Register from the 1st April 2010). The Department has therefore negotiated with The Gas Safe Register and reached agreement that the Guernsey scheme will transfer to them from the 1st April 2010.
To explain and introduce the new arrangements, Guernsey gas installers have been invited to a meeting on the 2nd March 2010 at 7pm at the Peninsula Hotel, where they will be introduced to the new organisation by a representative of Gas Safe. Gas installers will be invited to renew their registrations with the Gas Safe register, which will then be effective from the 1st April 2010.
These changes will have little or no effect on local gas installers or the general public who buy their services. The same gas installers will be registered and will be required to produce an identity card on demand. The only noticeable difference will be that the card will be branded with the Gas Safe logo rather than CORGI. Installers will see their registration fees remain the same or reduce, provided that they register on-line.
Members of the public wishing to make enquiries or complain to an approved body will, from the 1st April 2010, have to contact Gas Safe at www.Gassaferegister.co.uk or
call 0800 408 5500.
