The British Safety Council, one of the world’s leading health and safety organisations has presented Guernsey Electricity with an International Safety Award for the forth time in five years.

The Council made their decision following a rigorous assessment of Guernsey Electricity’s health and safety practices by an independent adjudication panel. The company is the only Channel Island’s business to have won the award this year.

The awards recognise companies’ commitment to health and safety, thereby preventing injury and ill health to staff. Winning organisations must clearly demonstrate that comprehensive health and safety policies are in place, as well as a commitment to a positive safety culture from the shopfloor to the boardroom.

The judging panel also looks for evidence of the adoption of behaviours that have safe and healthy working practices at their heart and that workers have the necessary skills and competence to ensure risks to health and safety are properly controlled. Companies are assessed on significant improvements achieved during the previous year.

Guernsey Electricity’s managing director, Ian Watson, said the award was recognition of the company’s commitment to provide a safer working environment for all staff. ‘We have a strong health and safety management system at Guernsey Electricity. This has been made possible by everyone at every level of the company making safety their top priority.’

Guernsey Electricity’s health, safety and risk manager, Paul Craig, added: “We manage our risks on a daily basis, ensuring a safe working environment and our occupational health provision is improving year on year.’

‘However, you must never be complacent in an industry like ours,’ said Mr Craig. ‘We all take our responsibilities seriously and understand that we have a duty to ensure we protect ourselves and others. This positive attitude and active engagement from our staff is what has helped us win this award.’
