Herm gets broadband
Engineers from Cable & Wireless have brought the island up to speed with the rest of the Bailiwick. Previously limited to a dial-up Internet service, broadband services are now available for island residents and visitors through fixed line services.
Herm Island is also planning to install Wi-fi in key tourist areas in the island to improve the visitor experience.
This year Herm Island launched a social media marketing campaign on a number of platforms, including Facebook and Twitter.
Herm’s Hospitality Director Jonathan Watson said that social media marketing had unlocked new markets for the island and allowed interaction with the island’s followers on the various platforms.
“A full broadband service will be a big boost for Herm, both for our visitors and for the island community,” he said.
“Herm Island has created a significant reputation for its position in social media marketing – broadband brings our Internet service up to speed with the messages we’re putting out there.”
Craig Burton, Head of Core Engineering at Cable & Wireless, said that the company seized the opportunity to undertake the Herm project as soon as it became feasible.
“We needed to replace our existing connections with Herm with higher capacity equipment and this was an opportune moment to switch to broadband too,” he said.
“I’m sure everybody in Herm will soon start to see the benefits of a better Internet service.”
