Findings from a survey conducted by managed and professional IT service provider Itex, has revealed that the opportunities presented by the IT sector in the Isle of Man are becoming increasingly more appealing for young islanders. The survey highlighted that 75% of participants were excited about the IT opportunities the Island had to offer with 17% of participants stating their desire to pursue a career in IT, ranking higher than any other industry. The results are extremely positive for the IT industry as it seeks the next generation of talent to thrive in the sector.

The survey, which was completed by 146 Islanders ranging from students to career changers who attended the careers fair last month, further revealed that salary and benefits, as well as training and personal development ranked amongst the most important factors when considering a career path. The social ambiance/cultural fit of a company in addition to travel opportunities ranked at the lowest end of the list.

Itex Isle of Man Managing Director, Alyson Hamilton Lacey said, “We are excited by the quality of candidates we have seen coming through the careers show. IT is such a crucial service to most industries on the island especially the growth sectors such as eGaming, which have become a significant part of our business. The key for us is finding people that have a genuine interest and talent in IT, not just those that have studied it academically. When you are working with tools that change so rapidly you need staff that will understand the trends, embrace them and maximise the potential of them.“

Will Challoner of Itex, who conducted the survey said, “It was great to see so many young people taking an active interest in their careers options, and I was particularly impressed with the amount of people who spoke to us about a career within the IT industry. I think that in the current economic climate, it is crucial to reinforce that there are many interesting and challenging jobs in the IT sector, and you do not have to travel abroad to find them. The Island is an important offshore financial service provider, as well as hosting many large eGaming companies, all of which rely on cutting edge IT solutions. There are plenty of opportunities for those who wish to pursue a career in IT.”

As part of the 2010 Isle of Man careers fair, Itex gave attendees the chance to win a brand new iPod touch. All participants who correctly answered three pre survey questions were entered into a prize draw for their chance to win an early Christmas present. The lucky winner drawn at random was Emma Watson, a student from Ramsey Grammar School, who was delighted with her win. Will Challoner, Technical Account Executive at Itex, will be presenting Emma with her prize at the school during their morning assembly this Thursday 16 December.

Itex currently provides offshore IT services for some of the largest eGgaming and financial service companies in the world.
