The opportunity for a week-long internship at the Deutsche Guggenheim or to exhibit work at the Saatchi Gallery in London would be a dream come true for most artists. But this year it will be a reality for successful students from Guernsey and Jersey who enter the Deutsche Bank Community Art works competition.

Globally, Deutsche Bank has a long standing commitment to both the arts and to nurturing talent and creativity. To mark the Bank’s 40th anniversary in the Channel Islands, the Deutsche Bank Community Art Works project has been launched. A programme of events will run throughout 2012, commencing with the schools’ competition.

Students in each island have been invited to prepare a piece of art interpreting a creative brief based on Deutsche Bank’s global claim 'Passion to Perform'. Between now and Easter, they will also be invited to attend mentor sessions with practicing artists who will inspire and guide them through the project. The work will be judged in April and shortlisted entries displayed in exhibitions in both Islands.

The winning secondary students, between the ages of 11-17 will be treated to a weekend in London with their guardians and an itinerary prepared by Deutsche Bank’s art experts. One day will involve lunch at the Saatchi gallery to view their own work, which will be displayed as part of the schools exhibition. The winners in the 18-21 years section will spend a week in Berlin undertaking an internship at the Deutsche Guggenheim – the opportunity of a lifetime for budding artists.

Alistair Hicks is Art Adviser to the Deutsche Bank Group and renowned author on contemporary art. He will be leading the judging panel, which also includes artist Jason Butler and representatives from the Guernsey Arts Commission and Jersey Arts Trust. He said “We are incredibly fortunate that through our close contacts in the art world, we have been able to secure these extraordinary prizes. For any student wishing to pursue further studies in this field, both prizes will certainly provide invaluable and memorable experiences for them.”

Andreas Tautscher, Chief Country Officer for Deutsche Bank in the Channel Islands commented, “We see this as an opportunity to reinforce our support of the local community - what better way than to combine our global passion with the art world. This is an innovative scheme that will allow budding artists at all skill levels to get engaged. Through the mentor scheme, the students will be exposed to the realities of being a professional artist and, in sharing their knowledge and expertise, the mentors will inspire and encourage the entrants not only with this project, but hopefully with their curriculum work too.”
