Jersey Telecom (JT) has announced the launch of a free text warning service, which has been designed to help customers keep their data roaming charges to a minimum when using their mobile phone or handheld device abroad. There are no extra voice or data charges for customers travelling to the Isle of Man or Guernsey, but it does cost more when Islanders travel further afield.

From April 6th 2010, an automatic text message will be sent to the mobile customer as soon as 2MB of data has been used while roaming. The message will warn that potentially high roaming charges apply when abroad, and will point them to the JT call centre for further details.

JT is the first Channel Island provider to introduce the text warning service which is being adopted globally by a number of telecom companies. It has roaming agreements in over 140 countries around the world, and there is a full list of them available at www.jerseytelecom.com/roaming.

Roaming charges are applied by telephone companies to offset the extra cost of connecting calls, or data usage, when the customer is connected to another company’s network.

To help customers understand what they will be charged for when roaming, and to be able to minimise those charges, Jersey Telecom is launching the following additional initiatives:

1.Specific web pages have now been created at www.jerseytelecom.com/roaming, setting out a step by step guide to minimising voice and data roaming charges.

2.Leaflets detailing roaming charges, and how to keep them to a minimum, are being handed out to customers in the JT shop on Queen Street; shop staff are also able to advise customers on how to reduce extra costs.

“All our customers are advised to check our website before leaving the Island, to make sure they know what the likely roaming charges are, and how to reduce them”, says Tim Ringsdore, MD of the CI Division at Jersey Telecom.

“But there isn’t always time to do that, so we have launched a new text warning service to make sure that customers are made fully aware that they will incur extra costs when roaming and accessing e-mails, browsing the internet or using other applications that require data connectivity. We have made sure our website has full details of all roaming charges, and also created a new leaflet containing all the details, which is available either in our shop, or to be downloaded from the website”.

“We keep our roaming charges to an absolute minimum, but we want to make sure any extra costs don’t come as a surprise to customers – our new text warning service will do just that”.
