Local businesses are invited to attend a conference exploring the issue of dyslexia in the workplace at the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel on Wednesday October 6th 2010.

Hosted by the Jersey Dyslexia Association and sponsored by State Street as trustees of the Amazon Trust, the conference will provide expert guidance and raise awareness of dyslexia in the work environment.

Dr Gavin Reid, an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society and visiting professor at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, will be guest speaker at the conference. Dr. Reid has written more than twenty books in the field of dyslexia and regularly lectures on the subject around the world.

Latest statistics provided by the Jersey Dyslexia Association suggest that up to 1 in 10 people in the workplace may have some form of dyslexia, ranging from mild to severe.

Ruth Smith, Chair of the Jersey Dyslexia Association, commented:

“The purpose of this conference is to provide specialist knowledge about how the work environment can be enhanced to help bring out the best in people who may be dyslexic. The conference will provide practical examples and recommend subtle changes that can be made to make the workplace more dyslexia friendly. Being able to identify, accept and support employees with dyslexia can add tangible benefits to an organisation and can also provide opportunities for employees with dyslexia to develop their skills and fulfil their potential”
