Guernsey AIS Data
The Guernsey Maritime Traffic is displayed utilising the worldwide AIS system (Automatic Identification System). AIS is required on all ships weighing above 299GT. Each ship has an AIS transponder that is linked to its VHF system, broadcasting its position. Using specialised software base stations and other ships all know where each other are.
The Channel Islands, the Western Approaches and the English Channel are one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. Clicking on various ships will show you their position, their tracking and, sometimes, a picture.
